Nice little place. Good food. Staff is very friendly and nice. Exactly what we were looking for.... a place to sit and relax and grab a sandwich/lunch
Great local place to meet and talk. I had an interesting and entertaining conversation. Fries were excellent, fresh potatoes. Skip the fried fish. Kareoke at 10 on Mondays. I bet that is interesting.
They have a great patriotic Presidential offering.
Website says opens at 11. We show up at 11:45 and there’s a closed sign on the door....& on Valentines Day. Would have liked to try the place out.
The Devonshire Arms Cafe is a great little restaurant which is very affordable in the college town of Shepherdstown West Virginia. If you stay at the Bavarian inn, as we usually do, it appears there are only a few places that the college crowd could actually afford. The Devonshire Arms Cafe is one of them. I have only been there once, but while there I tried their fish and chips. It was very good and I liked the atmosphere of the small town restaurant. The prices were very reasonable. There are actually quite a few places like this if you are willing to walk around the main streets of Shepherdstown. I would love to go back. I've only seen this restaurant during the daytime when there was not a large crowd. But I would say that it was very comfortable and casual, as well as affordable. More than anything, the food was good. Not sure if this is typically just accustomed to college students, but make yourself at home and you will fit right in.
Quaint, small, and casual place for good pub/bar food. Enjoyed my lunch. Recommend the fish and chips.
It's the only bar open after 1 am a lot of the time. A lot of bad decisions are made on many a late night.
Nice small spot for quick bite and cold drink. Friendly service. Good food at reasonable prices.
Wow great food great prices great staff. Really cool atmosphere.
Food was very good and unique
Love this quaint little bar/restaurant and the English food that they serve. The fish and chips are the best anywhere!
Loved the fries, and onion rings, and burger.
Awesome place, great food, lots of English fare. Love the people.
Love the atmosphere. Food is a bit pricey
Delicious food, great specials, and friendly staff and patrons. Go visit Jason!
The place was not highly rated but I think it is a diamond in the rough. You should look the place over and take it for what it is: a pub in the US with good food, good service, and good beverages. Shepherdstown is a small community where smoking is still prevalent so you'll run into some stink there. The D is dog-friendly so you may or may not like that aspect. Cozy, quaint place. The fish and chips hit the spot and were prepared well. The chips are hand cut fries but still full the bill. Service was quick and our server was very nice. No kids menu but they do have, grilled cheese, BLT, or sides like bacon or fries too make a kid happy.
We had the full British tea service yesterday and it was the best full tea I've ever had. The tea was perfectly brewed, the sandwiches were delicious, and the desserts (made personally by the owner) were to die for. Will definitely come back and bring friends!
Great atmosphere, like being welcomed into a long-lost family member's pub on a rainy afternoon. I much appreciated that the volume of the music was low. Granted, we were there on a Tuesday afternoon.
Honestly, I really wanted to like this place. I went three times before writing a review (hoping it would improve), most of the tables are broken, booths have duct taped seats and the establishment is dirty. I thought maybe the fish and chips would be decent. I wasn't expecting the quality to match a proper chippy but that doesn't excuse the poxy food they serve. The fish was burnt and seemed to be cooked in old grease taking the spot worst fish and chips I've ever had! The scones are just American biscuits and the clotted cream was just plain butter. The only thing I enjoyed here was the tea but, you can't mess up hot water and a bag. Suppose if you don't mind dirt and sit at a bar seat to just drink all would be well. Just don't expect British food here, just an aesthetic. Sad to say I won't be making a fourth trip here.
My wife &I have been coming to this pub for the past 15 months and I must admit the service and quality of food has been declining in this short period of time. While we love the quaint ambience this pub has to offer their food selection is non existent. For the second visit in a row we ordered cottage pie only to be told there was none available. How does a British Pub not have Shepherds pie when it is clearly on the menu? When asked I was told they ran out of ingredients to make this up but someone at the restaurant from the previous night alerted management of this but it appears no one decided to follow up on the request for the next days opening. If the restaurant opens up at noon how is it possible they don’t have adequate supplies to serve food to the public? Needless to say we paid for our drinks, left the pub, had lunch in Martinsburg and will probably dine at another restaurant in Shepherdstown in the near future.
Great local hangout. Live music , nice menu with reasonable prices. Excellent British pub.
Great little pub. Friendly staff. Nice place to meet with friends, or just stop in for a brew.
Love it! Great food, excellent drinks, wonderful company.
Didnt feel welcomed at the Devonshire
Delicious French press coffee! Happened upon this little gem while in Shepherdstown to go to the Farmer's Market. Will definitely be returning! Relaxed and dog friendly! Love it!
Extremely well made hot wings
The food was not good. The fish was over cooked, they were out of just about everything we tried to order— including half of what was on the kids menu because “they don’t serve many of them”. It’s a hotdog... lol, ok. The bangers were undercooked. The service was pathetic as I had to call to the bar for refills. And the bathroom... oh so gross! There are so many great food choices in Shepherdstown and this is not one of them.
Might be my new favorite lunch stop in Sheperdstown! The Reuben sandwich is excellent, best French fries ever, great bartender and friendly customers. Definitely recommend it
Atmosphere and bar tenders are excellent. Food is great as well.
Only complaint, the kitchen closes at 9pm. Everything else is awesome.
Driving through town and stopped by. Great beers on tap. Fast service. Lunch time. Ate the BLT and can't complain. Seems like a great pub to just stop and get a beer. The place was clean.
Great place for a drink. I came here the other day when the kitchen was closed. I wasn't able to grab the fish and chips I wanted. The beer selection is very good. The bartender on duty was friendly and was great to speak with. Good local pub. Affordable and laid back.
Was in town for work and found this place. The locals there were incredibly friendly. Didn't eat but only had their beers. Glad I found this place
The daytime staff at the Dev are absolutely fa-nominal. My friend introduced me to this place a year and a half ago and I have never even considered another bar in Shepherdstown. Food is great, Cook is great, Jason the bartender is polite, friendly, and patient! If you want friendly service and great food this is the place to be! I would not recommend coming past 5 or 6 because the evening staff are only worried about talking amongst themselves and more focused on the football game then the customers(Sunday evenings)
Great food in the heart of Sheppardstown and very reasonably priced.
Stayed locally for the weekend. Tried this place on a whim. Great decision! The atmosphere is unique and welcoming. Staff is amazing. Cook even came out and made sure our food was cooked to our liking. Above expectations. Great place. Had a ball. Will be coming back again soon.
This place is my preferable place. Of all restaurants I know I like it most. I never miss an opportunity to go to this restaurant. Whenever I feel like having a fair lunchon, this restaurant comes straightaway to my mind. extremely good and food and a large list of dishes.trained staff, and great atmosphere. Also, the bill is affordable. I praise this place with great pleasure.
Food was good. Cool locals.
Love the Dev! I'm sure the whole menu is great but the fish and chips are so good I can't move past them!Great staff, cozy atmosphere and we of course, love the owner Caroline!
I have been to the Devonshire multiple times, and while the food is good, it doesn't overcome many of the places problems. The restaurant is filled with flies and just seems like it has never been cleaned. The service is kind of based on whether someone sees you come in and is there a lull in the conversation between the server and their friends at the bar. They don't do proper staggered appetizers into entrees, so if you want to enjoy your apps with a drink, make sure you don't order your entree until you are ready to actually eat it. After you finish eating, be prepared to wait for the check even if you are the only one in the place because the staff is not very attentive. As much as I want to support local restaurants, they really need to clean up their act, quite literally, before I come back again.
Was surprised by the complete lack of seasoning in the burger and the fries were just kinda not good. Good buffalo wings though.
Im under 21 and they wouldn't even let me just sit in there 1/10 would not recommend
Usually I would have a great time at the pub, enjoying the food and the drinks but tonight they decided to hire a new bartender (Shana). Drinks were watered down, lacked flavor, never measured any cocktails, dismissive, always going on a smoking break when needed and did not wash her hands at all. Only protocol she followed was checking for ID which I do applaud but I am here for good drinks and laughs; not water and attitude. Fair warning, if you ever go to the dev know who is the bartending that night because you will be wasting your money for over priced H2O. Hopefully everyone could heed my warning and avoid a dreadful night.
I love local Pubs and the Devonshire does not disappoint. If you're looking for a warm welcoming environment where you can meet community members as well as enjoy a couple drinks and some good food you should try the Devonshire.
Great Gypsy Jazz on Tuesdays. The band is incredible. Also the staff are nice and the drink specials are appealing.
The beer battered fish and fresh cut fries were awesome!Update: Still awesome! The chef is incredible and the waitress is a gem. Perfect evening out.
Nice place for a Full English, in memory of the original 18th C. British colonials? A homey comfortable place with solid food, great service, and a nice selection of beers.
Pub vibe where you can meet locals for a friendly fun time. Local prices and hearty fare. Service is upbeat and responsive. Really good FREE music on Tues pm (The Deraillers). Best place in town any day. Bonus: Open 7 days/week! Doggy-friendly.
Great British atmosphere and decor! Food was prompt and delicious! If in the area I'll definitely return.
